2017-2018 National Team Athlete Announces
USA Swimming Today has finally announced the long anticipated 115 members of the 2017-2018 National Team. This complete USA Swimming National Team roster honors the nation's top swimmers according to this year's performances. The roster reveals the top six swimmers that will represent the USA in each individual Olympic event.
At the 2017 FINA World Championships in Hungary, the United States earned a record breaking 38 medals in pool competitions and 3 more medals in open water events. Not to mention, last week alone at the World University Games in Taipei, American athletes collectively earned 28 medals plus 32 additionally medals awarded at the Indianapolis FINA World Junior Championships.
The 2017-2018 USA Swimming National Team Numerically:
- 18 swimmers qualified in three plus events for the National Team
- 38 medalists from the 2017 FINA World Championships
- 60 + USA Swimming Clubs represented
- 29 States represented with California leading the way at 17 National Team Members
- 115 National Team Members today including 59 men & 56 women
These results were collected from combining the results of the 2017 World University Games, 2017 Phillips 66 National Championships, 2017 U.S. Open, and 2017 FINA World Championships. The 2017-2018 USA Swimming National Team headliners will include Katie Ledecky (Stanford Swimming), and Caeleb Dressel (Bolles School Sharks)who both earned the status of National Team in five to four events. Ledecky is ranked as the top American in the women's 1500-, 800-, 400-, and 200-meter freestyle events, while Dressel earned top American in the men's 100-m fly, 100-m free, and 50-meter free.
Leah Smith (Cavalier Swimming) a world championship medalist and Olympian will join sides with Ledecky as the only other competitive swimmer to earn the status of National Team in five events. Mallory Comerford (University of Louisville) is right alongside Dressel winning the status of National Team in four events.
Medalists Ashley Twichell (North Carolina Aquatic Club) and Jordan Wilimovsky (Team Santa Monica/Northwestern) will both be leading the twelve member Open Water National Team. Twichell was chosen for her individual FINA World Championship victories and National Team honors in the women's 1500-m and 800-m free, while Wilimovsky was picked for earning the 5-Kilometer Gold and 10K Silver during the summer at Lake Balaton, Hungary.
The USA Swimming National Team members will be offered benefits that include travel reimbursement for the USA Swimming arena Pro Swim Series meets as well as several training camp opportunities. Plus, a few choice athletes will be eligible for elite athlete health insurance and monthly assistance.
